History Of Laparoscopic Surgery Through The Years

There have been a lot of medical advancements over the years, not only in the whole world but also in Kolkata. Whether it’s a small thing like a fever or a bigger disease like cancers, there have been a lot of improvements in the treatment over the years. People used to be scared and make a big deal out of surgeries. But now surgery has become a lot more process with the help of laparoscopy.

With the advancement of laparoscopic surgery, whether it’s for hernia surgery or gallbladder surgery, a lot of complications have become very simplified. But ever wondered how it all got so easy? How suddenly when it used to take at least 2-3 weeks to recover from open surgery, now you only need a week to recover from laparoscopic surgery? Let us take a look.

To say the truth, there isn’t a day or a particular person that can be pinpointed in the history of when or who invented the process of laparoscopic surgery. It has been developed and perfected over decades by several doctors. It can be said that some form of this process was used in 1806 when Philip Bozzini used an instrument named Lichtleiter, which was used as a light-guiding instrument.

After that over the decades, many things got developed. In 1902, George Kelling performed laparoscopic surgery known as celioscopy during that time using dogs. In 1910, Hans Christian Jacobaeus used a similar approach to operate on a human. After that, this procedure was fine-tuned and popularized, especially when the introduction of the computer chip television camera was used during the development of laparoscopy.

In 1981, Kurt Semm from Germany was the first one to use laparoscopy to remove appendicitis. He established some of the techniques that went on to become standard medical procedures such as ovarian cyst enucleation, myomectomy for fibroids, and laparoscopic-assisted hysterectomy. In 1990, the laparoscopic clip applier was developed, which eliminated the need to replace each clip for every application. The new clip applier increased the popularity of laparoscopy as a means of removing the gall bladder through laparoscopic surgery.

Even now this procedure is being more and more developed. While earlier, there used to be several small incisions to perform the surgery, now for the last decade, it has been observed that single incision laparoscopic surgery is gaining popularity among the doctors. Also, ROBO surgery and telesurgery, have gained popularity too, mainly in the States and European countries.

So, it can be safely assumed that these two processes will also gain popularity in Kolkata in the coming years. But until then, Laparoscopic surgery remains the easiest and most popular process in our country.
